How to choose (infrared vs traditional)

Both can work at home. Weigh heat feel, install path, space, budget, and the habit you will actually keep. For the full format head-to-head, read the infrared vs traditional sauna comparison.

  • Heat feel

Traditional heats the air to roughly 170 to 195F and supports water-on-rocks steam. Infrared heats the body more directly at roughly 120 to 150F and is usually easier to sit in longer.

  • Space & installation

Spare room or garage points at infrared or a compact traditional indoor kit. A yard pad plus power opens barrels, cabins, and outdoor contrast builds.

  • Power requirements

Many traditional rooms need 240V. Compact infrared cabins are more likely to work on a dedicated 120V circuit. Amplify II/III shop specs show dedicated 120V 20A class; Amplify RED (and Amplify IV) need dedicated 240V. If you do not have a dedicated 240V circuit, wood-fired outdoor saunas heat with firewood instead of an electric stove, so the heater itself does not need panel power. You still need outdoor space, a chimney path, and local code compliance. Confirm live electrical and install notes on the model page before you buy. Always verify the exact model.

  • Typical use case

The strongest longevity cohort data tracks traditional Finnish heat. Infrared often wins on how often you will actually use it at home. Buy for the habit you will keep.

Common questions

View all guides →
Should I buy a sauna or a cold plunge first?

If heat is your main habit, start with the sauna. Pair with a cold plunge later. Buy the side you will use most weeks of the year. For which tub to buy, use the home cold plunge comparison; use the chiller vs ice guide or the chiller tub vs ice-only comparison for cooling method.

How much do home saunas cost?

Budget infrared and kit options often start around $1,500 to $5,500. Mid-tier infrared and traditional rooms commonly sit roughly $3,500 to $15,000. Turnkey outdoor contrast cabins can run much higher. For brand pairs, see Sun Home vs Clearlight or Almost Heaven vs Redwood Outdoors.

How do Amplify, Amplify RED, and mPulse differ?

Amplify is Sunlighten high-heat full-spectrum cabin collection (II to IV, about 2 to 4 person). Manufacturer compare charts list red light therapy as not included on Amplify, with electrical 120V or 240V by model (II and III shop specs show dedicated 120V 20A class; IV shows dedicated 240V). Amplify RED keeps the high-heat Amplify path and adds integrated red and near-infrared in the walls, with manufacturer electrical listed as 240V. mPulse is the PulseIQ Intelligent lane: red, near, mid, and far controlled separately, with integrated red light and 1 to 5 person sizes. Amplify shop Pricing starts from about $5,799 on the US collections page; Confirm live Pricing. mPulse US shop Pricing is consultant / Get pricing; Confirm live Pricing. See also Clearlight and Sun Home as standard infrared cabin options.

How does Sunlighten Amplify RED differ from Clearlight or Sun Home?

Amplify RED is a full-spectrum infrared cabin with red and near-infrared light integrated in the walls, not a bolt-on panel, and a hotter IR sit (up to about 170F under appropriate conditions) on a dedicated 240V circuit. Clearlight and Sun Home are standard infrared cabins in our inventory. Eucalyptus shop sale for II to IV sits about $7,699 to $10,299; Confirm live Pricing. For the high-heat lane without integrated red, see Amplify. For PulseIQ programs, see mPulse.

What is Sunlighten mPulse Intelligent?

mPulse is Sunlighten Intelligent collection powered by PulseIQ. Manufacturer describes independent delivery of red light and near, mid, and far infrared, with app and tablet programs. That differs from Amplify high-heat full-spectrum positioning and from Amplify RED integrated red/NIR plus full-spectrum heat on 240V. Clearlight and Sun Home remain standard infrared cabin options in our inventory on the home saunas guide. Confirm live Pricing on Sunlighten for mPulse.

Infrared or traditional for home?

Traditional delivers higher air heat and loyly when you can do 240V. Infrared is usually easier indoors on a dedicated circuit and easier to sit in longer. Buy for the install path you actually have. The infrared vs traditional sauna comparison expands this into a full head-to-head.

Are infrared saunas as effective as traditional?

They feel different. Traditional Finnish heat has the strongest longevity cohort data and the classic steam experience. Infrared often wins on adherence because it is easier to install and sit in longer at home. Effectiveness depends on the habit you will keep. See the infrared vs traditional sauna comparison for the format split.

Can I set a home sauna up in a small space?

Yes, with tradeoffs. Compact infrared kits and some indoor traditional pods fit spare rooms, garages, and apartments better than outdoor cabins. Check doorway clearance, ceiling height, and the exact electrical path before you buy.

Do I need a chiller if I add a cold plunge later?

Only if you will plunge most days. Occasional users can start with bag ice or winter fill and add a chiller once the habit sticks. See the chiller vs ice guide or the chiller tub vs ice-only comparison before you lock a tub budget.

Not medical advice. Sauna and contrast therapy can be risky for some people. Talk with a clinician if you have heart disease, blood pressure concerns, are pregnant, or take medications that affect heat tolerance.
