How we research gear

Home gear pages are research picks, not a pretend lab. We compare public specs and pricing so you can match frequency, space, and budget before you spend.

Research picks, not fake tests

Unless a product is marked personally tested, we have not run a controlled long term trial of every SKU on the page. Picks are based on manufacturer specifications, public pricing, installation requirements, filtration, footprint, and daily maintenance load. When Ben tests something firsthand, the page will say so.

Fields we care about

  • Dimensions and footprint

Will it fit a balcony, patio, garage, or dedicated indoor bay? Vertical barrels vs lay flat tubs matter more than brand aesthetics.

  • Electrical and install

Outlet type, dedicated circuits, chiller placement, and whether a plumber or electrician is realistically required.

  • Filtration and water care

Filter, ozone/UV, and how often you must change water if you plunge most days.

  • Insulation and climate

Outdoor winter use, freeze protection, covers, and how hard summer heat works a chiller.

  • Warranty and support

Published warranty length and whether the brand sells parts and service openly.

  • Indoor vs outdoor fit

Condensation, flooring, drainage, and neighbor-friendly noise from chillers.

  • Maintenance load

Daily and weekly chores: ice logistics, filter changes, sanitizer, and cover care.

  • Last price checked

Public MSRP or common bundle ranges labeled as About. We recheck periodically and still tell you to confirm on the brand site.

  • Researched vs personally tested

Default status is researched. Personally tested only appears when Ben has used the product and we say so explicitly. We do not invent lab tests or fake long term reviews.

Labels on comparison pages

Badges like "Top research pick" or "Best footprint" are editorial shorthand for who a category fits, not a claim that we lab-tested every unit. Price bands are about ranges because MSRPs and bundles move.

Affiliate honesty

Some gear links may become affiliate links later. That never changes how we describe tradeoffs, and we disclose when a link may earn a commission. Studio listings stay editorial and are not pay to play.

Affiliate disclosure: Some outbound product links may become affiliate links over time. Studio listings are editorial and are not paid placements unless marked otherwise. We only recommend products and studios we would consider ourselves.
